Tour de France, 2008: Stage 19 Preview, July 25, Roanne to Montlucon, 165.5 km
It’s three days and counting until the conclusion of the Tour de France. But for opportunists who have yet to win and teams still trying to salvage the race, the 19th stage may be the final opportunity.
The final true road stage of the 95th edition will be held Friday, July 25 and the weary 150 remaining riders from the 180 starters July 5 in Brest will pedal 165.5 kilometers (102.8 miles) from Roanne to Montlucon.
The expected four-hour ride will feature two short climbs (category 3 and 4) in the first 25 miles and remainder of the trek will comprise largely flat roads across central France.
The race’s final showdown for the podium order in Paris on Sunday will be contested Saturday with a long individual time trial. As such, overall title contenders will just need to keep focused Friday, stay on their bikes and allow those seek
ing a day’s glory to have at it.
Montlucon has been a stage finish five times, but not since 2001. That year, Belgian Serge Baguet bolted from a breakaway and held on over Jabob Piil of Denmark to snag the stage win. The peloton arrived 13 seconds later.
Beyond the overall title, the Tour has several other jerseys, the points (green) and best young rider (white) competitions are likely to play into the picture in the 19th stage.
Likewise, some of Tour’s aging riders, Germany’s Erik Zabel (Milram), Robbie McEwen (Silence-Lotto) of Australia and Robbie Hunter (Barloworld) of South Africa have been relatively quiet in the Tour, other than in their respective team capacities.
The day’s rolling terrain could suit one of those veterans. Or, a classic sprinter like Norway’s Thor Hushovd (Credit Agricole), the stage 2 winner, or Spain’s Oscar Freire (Rabobank), the 14th stage winner and points leader, could emerge again.
