Asilomar State Beach and its accompanying conference center are among the most well-known destinations on the Monterey Peninsula. It’s surprising, therefore, that several other nearby locations are among the same area’s most unheralded accommodation choices. One option is Pacific Gardens Inn. It’s located across the street from Asilomar and offers a quaint alternative for area visitors seeking a smaller, family friendly inn.
For all of its picturesque views, clean air and bountiful recreation, visitors to South Lake Tahoe also get a sensory overload of what they likely don't want to see. Casinos and jumbo-sized entertainment marques promote the area’s leading industries, but the flash doesn’t fit the environment. Likewise roadside motels, some in near disrepair, do little for the California-Nevada border city’s image. Add is all up and it only further distinguishes an accommodation choice like Lakeland Village Beach & Mountain Resort.
It’s not an official name, but travelers to the Monterey Peninsula have the largest selection of motel and hotel rooms along “Motel-Hotel Row” in Monterey. The last property on the west side of Munras Ave., just prior to entering the Highway 1 entrance is the Mariposa Inn & Suites. Like many of its neighboring locations, the Mariposa Inn & Suites is nearly 50 years old. And earlier this year, its owners and the new general manager, Joy Anderson, decided the Mariposa Inn had seen better days. A complete renovation began this spring.
Carmel is among the country's most popular small-city destinations. Quaint restaurants, art galleries, boutique shops, unique homes and famous golf courses are all backdropped by the Pacific Ocean. As such, Carmel has a steady influx of constant visitors who often fill the city’s nearly 1,000 guest rooms, particularly during popular global sporting events, festivals and conferences.

So, while a visit to Carmel is a good choice for myriad reasons, it does present a dilemma: Where's the best place to stay? Logical choices, of course, vary depending on your reason for visiting the Monterey Peninsula — business to budget travel, a romantic getaway to golf. Carmel is not an inexpensive destination, but one location that provides a good cross-section of accommodations needs is Carmel Lodge.

Visiting Carmel-By-The-Sea for the first time or as a frequented destination affords a good dose of sensory overload. Art galleries, restaurants, unique homes and businesses and myriad recreation choices are all canvassed by the majesty of the Pacific Ocean.

And there's the potential problem. Like other popular Monterey Peninsula cities, with so much to see and do while visiting Carmel, where's the best place to stay?

It's not an easy choice, particularly considering that within a one-mile radius of downtown Carmel, there are more than 60 accommodation options that combined feature more than 1,000 rooms.

The unassuming Tally Ho Inn is among the most convenient, well-appointed, historic and quaint options.
