Tour de France, 2008

The daily procession of automobiles, trucks, motorhomes and bicycles in the Tour de France has reached its saturation point. Hundreds of officials' cars, team vehicles, media cars and photographers' motorcycles depart each stage of the race in a grand and often frantic ceremony more elaborate than the departure of the cyclists.

But the Tour de France is nothing if not a moveable money machine, which is why one of its most important sponsorships is the race's official vehicle. And it's why Skoda has extended his contract with the race through 2001.
With its reputation at stake and organizers always seeking to keep the storied Tour de France fresh, a unique 2008 route for cycling's premier event was announced Thursday.

For the first rime in 40 years, the Tour will not include a prologue, the traditional short opening individual time trial that determines the race leader for the first stage. Instead, the first stage July 5 will be from Brest to Plumelec. The race will end July 27 after a counterclockwise trek through the Pyrenees and the Alps.
